WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information
Shinica Thomas
Wake County Board of Commissioners
District 06
Candidate Statement:
Shinica was dedicated to public service long before she joined the board in 2020. Previously, she worked for the North Carolina Community College System in the Information Technology and Workforce Development department and as a Human Resources professional writing policy and conducting grievance and mediation sessions in the workplace.
Importance of this Race:
We need Democrats to continue their service on the Board, protecting our families and controlling growth in our county. Its seven Democratic members oversee a budget of $2 billion. The NC General Assembly passed a law in 2023 specifically to make it easier for Republicans to get elected to the Wake County Board of Commissioners. The Board is currently reflective of the heavily Democratic-leaning Wake County electorate. Ceding seats on the Board could open the door to ultraconservative members pushing extreme agendas, instead of representing the best interests of Wake County residents.
Office Responsibilities:
- The Wake County Board of Commissioners sets the County’s property tax rate and the annual budget.
- It regulates land use and zoning outside municipal jurisdictions.
- The seven-member Board oversees a budget of $2 billion.
Issues:
Affordable Housing:
She supports the preservation of affordable housing, through community partnerships and funding for new units.
Transportation:
She will participate in the planning and execution of multi-modal transportation between all local communities and the Greater Triangle Region, maximizing connectivity for all.
Education and Technology:
She will work together with broadband leaders to maximize the impact of existing and future connectivity projects, empowering our future leaders and innovating for a connected future.
