WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Carolyn Thompson

NC Court of Appeals
Judge Seat 12

Carolyn Thompson - NC Court of Appeals Judge Seat 12

Candidate Statement:

I am a former District Court judge, Superior Court judge, and Deputy Commissioner for the Industrial Commission with over 25 years of combined legal and judicial experience. As a seasoned trial attorney and jurist, I understand the importance of upholding the Constitution and applying the law to the facts of each case.

I believe I can make a difference in the service of equal justice as required by our laws and Constitution. True justice is independent of party affiliation, divisive ideologies, and social differences. I have taken and believe in the oath to consistently uphold our laws and Constitution.

For over ten years, I prosecuted petitions of abuse, neglect, and nonsupport of children. My practice has always included representing victims of domestic violence and their children. As a District Court judge, I successfully advocated changing our district’s court dockets so that judges could hear domestic violence cases separately from the general civil docket. This change gave families more time to resolve their issues without unnecessary delays.

I am a state-certified mediator for Superior Court cases and cases involving complex family financial disputes. As a part of giving back to the community, I also serve as a volunteer Teen Court Judge and youth mentor to help first-time youth offenders accept responsibility for their conduct and learn about the court system.

Importance of this Race:

Judge Carolyn Thompson joined the court in 2023. She believes in the rule of law and a justice system unbeholden to partisan politics. Her experience as a trial attorney and jurist has been a great addition to the court.

The NC Court of Appeals leans heavily Republican, 11 to 4. Judge Thompson’s opponent is a former NCGA Republican who voted against Medicaid expansion and cut taxes for the wealthy at the expense of working families. We must elect Judge Thompson for a freer, fairer future for North Carolina.

Office Responsibilities:

  • The NC Court of Appeals reviews the proceedings of trial courts for errors of law or legal procedure.
