WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Allison Riggs

NC Supreme Court Associate Justice Seat 06

Allison Riggs - NC Supreme Court Associate Justice Seat 06

Candidate Statement:

Governor Cooper appointed me to the Court of Appeals in 2023, and then to the North Carolina Supreme Court. On the Supreme Court, I’m proud to approach all the cases that have and will come before me with thoughtfulness, compassion, and a commitment to the rule of law. The Supreme Court deals with cases ranging from criminal law to family law to business law.

As a justice, my guiding principles are integrity, transparency, consistency and empathy. I believe that everyone in our courthouse should be treated with dignity and respect. And I believe the way our courts work should be as transparent as possible to foster accountability. As the youngest woman to ever serve on our state supreme court, I bring an important and new perspective to the bench.

As your voice on the court, I will work to ensure that the Supreme Court delivers justice to all North Carolinians without fear or favor.

Importance of this Race:

Prior to joining the NC Court of Appeals and being appointed by Governor Cooper to the NC Supreme Court, Allison Riggs spent 14 years working with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice in Durham. She has argued multiple cases before the US Supreme Court and has been a champion for reproductive freedom and voting rights.

The North Carolina Supreme Court is currently skewed Republican by a 5 to 2 margin. This is a vital seat for Democrats to retain as we seek the majority in 2028. To move forward and make progress in North Carolina, we need to keep Justice Allison Riggs on our Supreme Court.

Office Responsibilities:

  • The NC Supreme Court is the state’s highest court.
  • The court has a chief justice and six associate justices, elected to eight-year terms, who hear oral arguments in cases appealed from lower courts.
  • The Supreme Court considers errors in legal procedures or in judicial interpretation of the law.
