WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information
Terence Everitt
NC State Senate
District 18
Candidate Statement:
Terence is a father, husband, small business owner, and Representative for House District 35. Now, he’s running for NC Senate to protect abortion rights, support our schools, & ensure our economy works for all North Carolinians. In 2023 Rep. Everitt announced he was stepping down from the General Assembly to spend more time with his family, but when he was asked to run for NC Senate he knew his responsibility to his community wasn’t over yet. Rep. Everitt sees what the Republicans are doing to our state and he refuses to sit idly by and let our state slide backwards.
Rep. Everitt is a graduate of The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law and owns his own law practice working on behalf of other small businesses, representing them in legal matters and assisting in the creation and development of new businesses. Terence and his wife live in Wake Forest with their two children. In his spare time he likes to read comic books, get outside with his wife, and spend time with his kids.
Importance of this Race:
Republicans gained a supermajority in the General Assembly in 2022, empowering them to override Governor Cooper’s vetoes of bad legislation. Since then, MAGA Republicans have rolled back gun safety laws, passed an extreme abortion ban, funneled a shocking amount of resources away from our public schools, and are in the process of reducing the corporate income tax to 0%. Before we can make progress in NC, we first must break the GOP supermajority by electing more Democrats to the State House and Senate.
Office Responsibilities:
- The NC General Assembly is the legislative branch of government and makes laws for NC.
- The Senate and the House of Representatives are collectively known as the General Assembly.
- The NCGA meets biennially and all members are elected for two-year terms.
- The Senate consists of 50 members, and the Lt. Governor is President of the Senate. In his absence, the presiding officer is known as the President Pro Tempore.
Issues:
Education:
North Carolina had a reputation as a state that highly values public education. Since taking control of the General Assembly, NC Republicans have repeatedly chosen to cut taxes for those at the top rather than investing in our public schools. NC now ranks 48th in the nation in per pupil spending and we spend just 2.32% of our GDP to support the public school system. It is time to start investing in our public schools again, in our children, and in our future. Right-wing politicians talk about “school choice” but real choice means making serious investments in our public schools so that they are the first, best option for North Carolina’s families.
Reproductive Freedom:
In the years since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court, we have seen far-right politicians in Raleigh roll back the protections counted on by generations of women. A woman’s health care decisions are incredibly personal and should remain between her and her doctor. I have always fought for the government to stay out of the doctor’s office, and in the Senate I will not stop working until every woman has the right to make her own health care choices.
Environment and Clean Energy:
North Carolina can have a strong economy that creates high paying jobs and also protects our environment. We cannot let big polluters evade laws designed to protect our air and water. Republicans in the General Assembly have stripped essential environmental protections, giving amnesty to corporate polluters and passing on the costs of cleanup to middle-class families. We need to hold them accountable as we continue to invest in clean energy technology and development. Clean energy doesn’t just benefit our environment and the health of our families – it has also been a significant source of economic development in the Tar Heel State.
