WCDP Election Central – Candidate Information

Josh Stein

NC Governor

Josh Stein - NC Governor

Candidate Statement:

Attorney General Josh Stein learned early on that some things are worth fighting for, no matter the opposition. His parents grounded him in our shared values of freedom, justice, and opportunity for everyone, and his faith teaches him that we are all children of God and we are called to make a difference. That’s why as Attorney General and as a state Senator before, Josh has taken on powerful special interests to protect families. Josh and his team have worked hard to keep families safe, hold corporate wrongdoers accountable, make polluters pay to clean up the messes they make, and defend your reproductive and voting rights.

Importance of this Race:

North Carolinians deserve a government that works for them. The Republican supermajority in our General Assembly has gerrymandered districts so they can cling to power. They seek to control the executive branch by passing unconstitutional power grabs and have made the courts partisan, given themselves the power to appoint judges, and written themselves out of our state’s public records law, avoiding transparency and public accountability. Our choice on Election Day is between Josh Stein, someone with experience, compassion, and leadership skills, who is dedicated to the people of North Carolina, and Robinson, someone with very little experience, a lack of accountability, and history of divisive, partisan, extremist views. As our next governor, Josh Stein will fight corruption and ensure leaders are working in the best interest of all of the people in North Carolina.

Office Responsibilities:

  • The Governor recommends to the General Assembly (GA) a comprehensive budget of the anticipated revenue and proposed expenditures of the State for the ensuing fiscal period.
  • The budget enacted by the GA is administered by the Governor.
  • The Governor will take care that the laws are faithfully executed.
  • Has veto power over legislation passed by the GA, though the GOP currently holds a super-majority, allowing them to override the Governor’s veto.
  • The Governor is the Commander in Chief of the military forces of the State except when they are called into the service of the United States.
